Report number 6
Beautiful Fraser Island
Next stop on our journey was Fraser Island, the biggest sand island in the world. More sand then anywhere else, including the Sahara! We chose an organised 2-day tour called "Northern adventure". Tourguide Joe picked us (and 15 others) up at 7.30 in his big 4wd bus. The Ferry took us to the Island in 50 minutes (look out for whales (non), turtles (non) and dolphins (ditto)) but it landed right on the beach (cool). On our first walk trough the rainforest we met a strangler fig. A nasty tree that slowly strangled a nice big old tree.
After lunch in Happy Valley we drove north on highway number 1: the beach (speedlimit 80 kph, watch out for fishermen). On Fraser Island there are only sandroads so everyone drives a 4wd.
We went for a swim in lake Wabbi, a sweetwater lake surrounded by rainforest on 3 sides and a big sandblow on the other. Not everybody from our group was happy to meet the big lizards who crossed our way.
On the island the sand has lot of different colours. Sometimes it looks like snow. When you step on it you can see a yellow footprint. The dunes can be used as a slide (daredevils go down on a surfboard). On the way back we met a dingo (wild dog) on the beach. He didn't look really wild but like a nice doggy looking for food.
At night we made a fire on the beach and looked at the (falling) stars and planets (yes ... you can see them).
Next day we drove north on highway no1 and saw the Mahoni Shipwreck (big rusty piece of junk), the Coloured Sands (actually the rainbow cought in the sandrock after being hit by a boomerang when protecting a woman), Indian Head (the high rock with wonderfull views of the island and the ocean. We saw a big group of dolphins and two big sea turtles swimming up and down. They were much nicer then the dolphins), Champagne Pools (swimming in a small pool in the rocks regularly filled with champagne from the ocean. Here everybody -not only the rich- can have a bath in champagne), Eli Creek (good fun in the clear creek floating as human crocodiles to the ocean) and Lake Allom (swimming with little turtles).

Next adventure will be sailing the Whitsunday Islands since we are allready in Airlie Beach. Lucky for Bart Hana talked to a girl about getting seasick after we booked a 3 day sailing trip otherwise she wouldn't go. We'll tell you about that next time.

Be good, be bad, just be
Hana & Bart
