Cairns
Lonely planet: "Cairns nightclub scene is notoriously wild and prmiscious, especially in the early hours of the morning - it has been said that if you can't get lucky here you may as well stop trying"
At our arrival in Cairns the hostels were fighting for us again. They all threw in free meals, tea and coffee and a pool, but "Tropic Days" was the only one with hammocks in the garden.
The big atraction in Cairns is the "Great Barrier Reef", so it was time for a dive trip. After a half hour (day according to Hana) of finding the best deal Bart chose a 3 day trip on the boat "Reef Encounter". The first day it was rainy and windy, so everybody was seasick at the fast boat that brought us to the "Reef Encounter" boat. Diving was great. Bart took the PADI-course "Advanced Open Water Diver", dived with sharks (!), saw a turtle, beautiful coral and lots of other fish.
Daintree rainforest & Cape tribulation
North of Cairns lies the Daintree Rainforest with the -crocodile filled- Daintree river. Just the place for us to take a river-cruise. (Un?)fortunatly the crocs were not at home when we visited so we still have all our arms and legs. The rivercruise was part of a tour to Cape Tribulation. A small place were the rainforest meets the ocean with just a hostel and a store. The store is not more than 2 shelves and a fridge (only frozen bread).
We hiked in the rainforest to -so called- "breathtaking waterholes", walked on the beach crowded with crabs, played volleyball with our german friends (beat them of course), swim naked in the ocean under the full moon, spent nights in the bar with our german and other friends, swim in the pool garded by the biggest spider we have ever seen in real life, took a tour with an aboriginal guide who told us about his death and reseraction and eat frozen fruit at a tropical fruit farm.
Then back to Cairns to catch our flight to Alice Springs.
